I took the day off from work yesterday for a couple of appointments with the babies.
Our day started out at Perkins for breakfast with my mom and sister. Going out for breakfast is probably one of my favorite things to do and now that the babies are old enough to sit in the highchairs and eat big people food, I’ve been trying to do it as much as possible. The babies munched on some eggs, toast, and pancakes and LOVED every bit of it!
Next up was our appointment with the Infant Development Follow Up Program. This is a grant funded program that is free to the consumer. Because Thomas and Skyler were born prematurely, it was recommended by the NICU that I participate. If any developmental delay exists, they would be able to find it early on which gives me the opportunity to be proactive about it. They focus on gross and fine motor skills, receptive and expressive language and socialization. We’ve been going every couple of months since the babies were born and I am happy to report that they are right on track (and a little advanced in some areas).
After the appointment, we headed back home and had some lunch at my parent’s house. We chilled there for a bit until it was time to head back out to the dentist for Thomas and Skyler’s first appointment. It was recommended by their pediatrician to visit a dentist at one year old and I completely agreed. I think it’s important for them to get used to going in hopes that they won’t ever be scared.
We arrived to really great waiting area with tons of toys for the kiddies. After filling out the required paperwork, we were called in. Our hygienist was super sweet and explained everything that was going to happen during our time there.
Thomas was up to get his teeth cleaned first and as soon as we laid him down on the chair, he start hysterical crying. She got through the cleaning and I gave him some praise to cheer him up. Next up was Skyler and she reacted the same exact way. The hygienist cleaned the only two teeth she has super quickly and I picked her up for some hugs and kisses as well. The doctor came in next to examine their mouths. Her examination was just as quick as the cleaning was but also involved some tears.
The doctor recommended completely getting rid of pacifiers, bottles and even sippy cups! I was shocked. I know pacifiers are not the best for teeth and mouth development, but I had no idea that sippy cups were not good either! The idea is that we want to promote nose breathing as well as letting the tongue sit on the roof of our mouths. Anything that requires sucking, keeps the tongue on the bottom of the mouth, which is the complete opposite of what we want.
Now, while I do agree with her, I also think they are still SO young to just pull everything away all at once. So, I will start by taking away the pacifier during the day and only limit it to naps and bedtime… because Jesus help me if they do not have them at bedtime! As far as the bottle and sippy cup go, I have ordered the Munchkin Miracle 360 Cup which is supposed to be the next best thing to a real cup. I’m not quite sure they are even ready for this, but hey, it’s worth a shot!
I’ve also already started brushing their teeth every night before bed. I bought these brushes and this toothpaste from Thrive Market. They love the taste of the toothpaste and never give me any issues with brushing their teeth – Thank God!
I am going to take the dentist’s recommendation one step at a time because it is a little overwhelming to think about all these changes at once. Their next appointment is not until October and my goal is to have them completely off of bottles and sippy cups (considering the 360 cup is a win) and HOPEFULLY off of the pacifier (wishful thinking?) 🙂
In other news:
I have a NEPHEW! Nathan Thomas was born on April 1, 2017 at 10:10pm. He is absolutely perfect in every way and we already are so in love with him.
And.. Thomas and Skyler met the Easter bunny for the first time over the last weekend!
Thomas was NOT at all impressed. This was basically the only picture they were able to get without him with ‘crying face’.. ah well, maybe next year?? I still think it’s adorable and I even bought the little picture keychain they sell.. serious mom-nerd over here. 🙂
