Thomas and Skyler are ONE YEAR OLD!.. and I am officially a mother to twin toddlers! I have never in my life imagined I could feel this amount of love and joy, but having children does that and I’m blessed to have two.
My first days of motherhood weren’t exactly like the ones you see on TV and in the movies. One year ago my husband and I were sitting in the NICU watching our babies. The days felt never ending as we waited for the OK to bring one or both of them home. We fed them, held them, talked to them, and then had to leave them.
I cried, a lot, but only when no one was looking, because I wanted to appear strong and capable of handling this. And I did handle it, I had no choice really. I pumped breast milk every two hours and brought it to the hospital every single day and as weird as it sounds, it helped me cope with the situation. It made me feel like I was being their mother when I couldn’t actually nurture them the way I wanted to.
But those NICU days have become such a distant memory and these two have AMAZED me ever since. This has been the most challenging, yet amazing year of my entire life. Sometimes it’s hard to believe that I actually care for two babies at the same time. Most people think my life is probably a chaotic mess and although I feel like that at times, I do my best to maintain a pretty well organized schedule for all of us.
Skyler is walking and completely running the show. She is a real tough cookie but with a sweet side. She thinks taking Thomas’s toys away from him is funny and her hands are constantly on him. We are doing our best to let her know that’s not the way to behave, but I think it’s going to be a bit longer before she really understands what we are trying to say. She’s really smart and curious and I love that about her. Skyler loves to dance, especially with daddy, which just makes my heart melt! If she is dancing with me, she always looks over at daddy to make sure he’s looking.
Thomas is just the sweetest thing. He’s not walking just yet, but he’s really close to it! He’s very laid back and oh so affectionate. Thomas will almost always come over to me for hugs and kisses.. I cannot even take the cuteness! He is sooo impatient and I keep saying I’m happy there is actually something he acquired from me – because clearly he did not get my looks! (Daddy’s mini me all the way).
Food has been so fun lately! I’ve been introducing all different foods to them and we have gotten more positive reactions than negative. Thomas has a wonderful appetite, while Skyler seems to be more of a snacker unless it’s something she truly LOVES. They had their first taste of pizza at their first birthday party and of course, they LOVED it! The only thing they haven’t been crazy about is veggies, but that’s no surprise really since they do lack some real taste… I will keep on trying though and I am determined to have veggie-loving children!
I have zero complaints in the sleep department – thank you Jesus! Bedtime is still 7-7:30pm and they are awake by 6am. Roughly eleven solid hours – I’ll take it! As long as I get my butt into bed at a decent hour (which lately hasn’t been too long after them) then I get a pretty decent night of sleep. Naps are happening twice a day for the most part. Thomas will nap for an hour or less at a time and Skyler about an hour and half at a time (9am & 2-2:30pm).
